Finding Material in the Catalog

Finding Material using our Online Catalog

The Catalog is ALWAYS the place to start searching for library material - Books, eBooks, and Films especially. Do note: The catalog does not search our databases - so it is NOT the first place to look for articles.

ONLINE CATALOG (ENCORE)

  • The catalog is also the search box at the top of the LTC Library homepage
  • Search by book title, author, ISBN, Instructor name (last name, first name) or course name (if it’s a textbook).

Searching by BOOK TITLE OR AUTHOR (Last Name, First Name)

  • Students may come in knowing part of the book title. This can be searched.
Example: Student says they need the Nursing Strategy book for class.
  • The Catalog isn’t Google. It searches Title, Author, and Subject fields (which we input).
  • So, if it doesn’t come up under Strategy, try Strategies. If that doesn’t work, ask student if they know the author or the Instructor. There are many pieces of info that can be searched.
  • There are actually two “Saunders strategies for text success” that sound like it could be it (notice neither have the title Nursing Strategies.
I’d then look at the Textbook icon and ask if this is a textbook for class.

Searching by INSTRUCTOR NAME

  • Example: Luke, Thomas or McNellis, Katherine (In many instances, less info is better. If you’d type in McNellis, Kathi nothing would come up because that’s not her official name).
  • Just type McNellis to start if the name is unique enough.
  • Typing in “Luke” alone would not bring up Tom Luke’s material first. But if that’s all you have, you can type in “Luke” and then click on the Instructor facet and he should be there.

    • You see he’s in there twice (that’s our error; we’re continuously working on improving this!)
    • But click on both to see the two books we have on reserve for him.

  • Look for the word “Textbook” as the material type to confirm.

  • Click on “Course Reserves” to see info on what course this is for and who the instructor is.
  • Then confirm with the student that this is what they need.

Searching by COURSE NAME

  • Student asks for the book for Fundamentals (That’s all they know).
  • Search for Fundamentals.
  • Then click on the Course facet on the left-hand side.

  • You’ll see there are MANY courses listed. You’ll have to ask the student for what program; who is the instructor; anything to help you narrow down. Oh, Nursing Fundamentals?
