Women's History Month began as Women's History Week in Santa Rosa, CA, in 1978. The week of March 8th was selected to correspond with International Women's Day. The National Women's History Project petitioned to designate the entire month of March as Women's History Month, and, in 1987, Congress passed Public Law 100-9, which officially set the month-long observance. Since 1995, each president has issued a proclamation honoring the contributions of American women.
