As our Bilingual Storytimes progressed, we wanted to look beyond our target languages and begin to incorporate more linguistic identities. For the April 2024 storytime, we chose the book "Walking Together" by Elder Albert D. Marshall and Louise Zimanyi / Illustrated by Emily Kewageshig. This book focuses on the Mi'kmaq concept of Netukulimk, meaning "to protect Mother Earth for the ancestors and for present and future generations." This book has integrated bilingualism - meaning Mi'kmaq and Anishinaabemowin words are incorporated contextually among the English in the text.
We once again offered a virtual option and an onsite option at our two satellite locations in Manitowoc and Sheboygan. These storytimes were a team effort and involved the multiple campus departments, including CCAMPIS, TRIO, the Library, satellite center staff, and the Office of Access, Equity and Inclusion.
As we move forward, we hope to continue to include even more languages and cultures in the Bilingual Storytime project.
