LGBTQIA+ Pride Month is celebrated in June to commemorate the June 1969 Stonewall riots, a series of protests against a police raid on a New York City gay bar. This event is seen as a spark for the gay rights movement. In 1999, to mark the 30th anniversary of the event, President Bill Clinton issued a proclamation declaring June to be Gay and Lesbian Pride Month. In 2009, President Barack Obama issued a proclamation to expand this observance to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month to honor the contributions of all LGBTIA+ Americans.
