Hmong Heritage Month (formally Hmong History Month) began in Marathon County in 2004. The month of April was selected to commemorate the April 1976 arrival of the first Hmong family in Marathon County. Hmong Heritage Month is recognized statewide to honor the contributions of the Hmong people to the country and to celebrate the culture of Hmong Wisconsinites. The Governor issues a proclamation observing Hmong Heritage Month in April and Hmong-Lao Veterans Day on May 14th.
