One way to significantly increase productivity is by using a calendar or planner to schedule your time. The key to this is putting everything into a calendar and relying on the calendar for notifications. The easiest way to do this is by using the calendar feature in Microsoft Outlook. I would suggest downloading the Outlook app on your smartphone so you can get notifications about your schedule at any time of day.

When building your calendar, be sure to set up a routine that you can fall into. Calendar events can be set to repeat on certain days to accomplish this. You should also add EVERYTHING to your calendar. this includes work, travel, meals, sleeping, etc. If you do not know how much time to allot for things, here is a brief guide:

  • Meals: research shows that dinner times can last as long as 45 minutes. We would suggest 45 minutes per meal to accommodate for things like cooking and cleanup
  • Studying/Homework: We use the idea of credit-hours to establish how much study time and homework time we need to aim for each week. Remember: for every credit you are taking, you need to spend 3 hours studying and doing homework. Schools will often call 12 credits "full-time" because it comes out to 36 hours per week. That is a full-time job!
  • Breaks: Don't study for hours on end without a break. Study for 1-1.5 hours and then switch subjects or take a 10min break. Research shows that taking breaks can improve efficiency.

If you want to know how well you are doing as far as scheduling goes, check out the time tabulator. It will show you how much time in a week you actually need!
