Academic Support and Tutoring: Resourcefulness

Resourcefulness

Tips on being resourceful

  • Ask people about resources available to you. You may find out that you had access to a trove of information, but you didn't know about it.
  • Learn how to sift through search results for legitimate articles and valid information. You can always ask a librarian on how to research like a pro.
  • Learn how to utilize search engines like Google. There are many tips and tricks that can narrow your search results.
  • Research your resources! Learn about the limitations of your resources. Things like AI can make errors that may be hard to catch.
  • Learn how to use your devices like a pro. We are only as efficient as our devices are. You can always talk with professionals at the Helpdesk or connect with the Technology Academic Specialist.

Did you know that there are many ways to refine a google search? Google does it's best with what we give it, but there are symbols and formatting that we can use to help Google do better.

  • Using quotation marks " "
    • When you use quotation marks around keywords, google treats those words as EXACT match keywords. Only content with those exact words, spelt that exact way, will be shown. This is especially useful when you want to search for a phrase and not a bunch of individual words.
    • Example: "Selling an Iphone" returns different results than Selling an Iphone.

  • Using the minus symbol -
    • When you type a minus symbol, the keywords that follow it will be treated as filters. Content that have those keywords will not show up in a search result.
    • Example: I want to search for a Microsoft Word Tutorial, but I keep getting YouTube results. I can just add -YouTube to the search to remove any website with the word YouTube on it.

  • Using Advanced Search
    • if you google Advanced Search Google will provide you with the link to the advanced google search function. This will allow you to search with lots of different options for filters.
